Lord Snape was elected as Labour Member of Parliament for West Bromwich East in 1974 until he stood down in the 2001 election. During his time as MP, he was a member of the Crossrail Bill Committee, the Procedure Committee and Assistant Whip. He entered the House of Lords in June 2004. He has a strong background in transport, having been Shadow Transport Spokesman in The House of Commons and is now a leading voice from The Opposition Benches in The House of Lords. He is a strong advocate of the bus industry and has made a number of speeches and interventions as the Bus Services Bill has passed through its Lords stages.
